Trends and Issues in Education For Mathematical Sciences

Course Synopsis

This course exposes student to the issues in mathematics education.  Among the issues covered are those related to achievement disparties between social groups, TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science W Study), access and equity, language of intruction, teaching approaches, professional teaching standards, assessment, curriculum, teacher certification, school culture, usage of technology in teaching and learning and ethnomathematics. Local as well as international issues are covered.


Learning Outcomes   : 
 
  1. Identify and evaluate educational concepts and issues related to mathematics education and to engage in critical debate about current educational issues in mathematics, drawing on evidence from theory, research and practice. 
  2. Recognize pupils’ learning needs in mathematics and interpret them in order to plan, teach, assess and evaluate lessons and schemes of work in mathematics. (C4, A3, CT3). 
  3. Relate current issues in mathematics education to the wider research fields of pedagogy, learning, assessment, and curriculum. (C3, A3, CT3, EM2)4.
  4. Work in teams, communicate effectively, and manage information to improve the quality of learning
